6 ways to use music to increase your productivity
6 ways to use music to increase yur productivity6 ways to use music to increase your productivityWhether youre using it to pump you up towork out when youre tiredor to unwind for abetter nights sleep, music is a powerful motivator in many different situations. According to the kollektiv atBrain.fm, functional music - which has specific characteristics - can also be ultra-helpful when you want tostay focused at work. But what exactly makes music functional? The team explains that it comes down to a combo of qualities that affect the brain. It could be the right density of sound texture, high energy yet low salience (distracting sounds), and many other acoustic characteristics, notesBrain.fmCEO Dan Clark. By understanding how the brain is affected by sound, we can make functional music directly and effectively, instead of relying on music that accidentally fulfills some of these criteria some of the time.If youve ever felt like the playlists you pick can truly affect your productivity , youre onto something the team backs up with science. Many of us already listen to music when we work, they affirm. The wrong music can put us at a disadvantage by distracting us and interfering with our ability to think. For example, pop music is designed to grab your attention. While listening to your favorite song while working can be fun, its not ideal for getting stuff done if youre distracted by it.On the other hand, music specifically designed for focus can help you work without totally stealing your attention. Ready to crank it up a notch? Keep reading for six science-backed tips thatll help you make the most of your playlists.1. Opt for songs without vocals or lyricsMusic with vocals/lyrics is generally more distracting, especially when reading, the team shares.2. Save distracting music for a workout.Distraction is your friend when working out, the team confirms. Save your favorite jams to see if they fit the rhythmic cycle of your exercise, which is also bright and attent ion-grabbing. Play it loud3. Know how music affects you.Studies suggest that different personalities respond differently to background music while working, clarifies Brain.fm director of science Kevin Woods. Not sure how music affects you at work? Consider trying one of the 12 difference focus categories at Brain.fm to find your perfect fit.4. Stick to uplifting tunes. We love Adeles slow songs as much as the next gal, but the Brain.fm team cautions against streaming your favorite blues and ballads when you need energy to do great work.5. Search for seamless transitions.Short tracks can possess a lot of the qualities that make music good for focus, but choppy transitions can throw you off course. Try to find playlists that weave tracks together seamlessly, or use music providers that offer long-form tracks, the team recommends.6. Tune in to music made using science. In the last few years, through scientific research and technology, music has been designed to have all of the characteri stics needed to be maximally effective, the Brain.fm team reminds. Weve been doing this for more than a decade, and love creating music thatll help you live a productive life. This article was originally posted on Brit + Co.

5 life lessons I learned from Beth Comstocks Imagine It Forward
5 life lessons I learned from Beth Comstocks Imagine It Forward5 life lessons I learned from Beth Comstocks Imagine It ForwardHow often have you been at work and wondered why you were tzu siche, where the work you are currently putting in will land you, or ultimately what your next move is career-wise? Answering this question for myself, I have these thoughts in my mind at least once per week. When I have these thoughts, I tend to find articles or books that can help me figure out how to navigate where I need to go and thats one of the best parts of reading Beth Comstocks new book,Imagine It Forward. Beth worked for nearly three decades at GE and served as President of Integrated Media at NBC Universal. In addition to being an author, she is currently thedirector at Nikeand a trustee of The National Geographic Society- in short, shes a total badass. The book- which welches released September 18th - is different from many career-related books, because although it does provide practica l tips that you could use towards your career, it reads almost as a career autobiography. Beth takes readers into a journey using her extensive career as a guide making it a great book for Millennial women at any point of their career. I wanted to chronicle the journey as a creative innovator, the struggle and the triumph of what that is, the author, Beth Comstock, said. With that being said, here are five takeaways fromImagine It Forwardand why you should read it nowYou can have a family and a thriving careerOften in our culture, theres a misconception that women cant have a family and a flourishing career unless your finances are hefty. Ive had conversations with friends who reiterate this thought, saying that they fear they couldnt have both kids and a career. Beths goes into this concept - she never let having a family stop her.In the book, Beth speaks about having her daughter, Katie, with her first husband and ultimately getting divorced. I came to see that - while incredibly hard - there was nothing shameful about endings or mistakes. It can be a wise decision to leave on path and choose another. The divorce left her as a single mother, but she didnt let that stop her and she even had more kids, got remarried, and continued her career journey. My career and motherhood started at the saatkorn time. I wanted to move forward in my career and I had chosen this path and put us on a path and I had to make it work, Beth told me. She also explained that often she gets asked questions from working women who want to start their family, but question when is the right time to do so. I didnt plan. I think you can overplan. I see women who wait for it to be the perfect time in their career, but theres no perfect time. You just figure it out.Learn to trust your doubts and whats meant for you is meant for youIn the book, something that stood out to me was to learn to trust your doubts. Its a very powerful idea, and something that we so often ignore. That pit in your st omach or you not being able to sleep when attempting to make a big decision are your gut speaking to you, and its your job to figure out what the issue is.For Beth, a pivotal point in her career came while she was working at NBC and was given an opportunity to work with Steve Jobs at Apple. For her, it just didnt feel right, and although she questioned her choice for years to come, she followed her doubt which made for an interesting career trajectory. We cant make uncertainty go away, but we can change the way we react to it.Every uncertainty is a new potential future, Beth said.Conversely, while its important to trust your doubts, you also need to trust your instincts and realize whats meant for you is for you. While working at CBS, Beth was offered a job at NBC. Everyone in her world thought it was not the best move because she would be leaving a top network to go to what was a struggling network at the time. Beth however, followed her intuition and took the role, in my gut, I kn ew this was the job I was meant to take. Well-meaning colleagues will try to stop you from making these bravely instinctive choices. Thats just how it is. Change-making creates resistance. It is against the roles. Change is seen as loss. It is scary, said Beth. But you have to learn not to stop yourself. You have to learn to give yourself permission to imagine a better way, to envision opportunity where others see risk.Naysayers, also known as Gatekeepers are all around, but dont let them hold you backWhenever Beth mentioned gatekeepers inImagine It Forward, the song Stronger by Christina Aguilera ran through my head. Beth explains exactly what a gatekeeper is by saying, Gatekeepers are those looking to keep hold of the little power they have. They see divergent thinking and action as threatening. They bank on our desire for approval. The worst thing they do is to create and police standards that the rest of us accept and internalize. You will find gatekeepers everywhere, in every jo b, in every classroom, in every family. And sometimes, I discovered, we invite them in our own minds. We all have gatekeepers in our lives, but reading this book - for me at least - will make me more conscious of the opinions I do take. So often, I know something feels right for me but sometimes ask the opinions of others to confirm what I know and sometimes, the feedback I get is not the answer that I want. Perhaps, these people could be gatekeepers and not people who genuinely care.Change is inevitableIn the same way brands have to think about change whether its implementing new tools, technologies or leadership to their pipelines, change is something that we must keep at top of our mind as we grow and navigate throughout our careers. On change, Beth says In change, people have to find their own path. You cant mandate how that happens. But you can create the right conditions.Throughout the book, Beth shows the changes she made in her career, as well as the changes that have happe ned at companies that she has worked for. Change is inevitable, and realistically a necessary agent to grow. Beth said that one of the things she wanted to show with the book is the evolution of change, the nature of change is changing and we all need to get ready by being more adaptable and we need to be that regardless of where you are in your career, she said. You need to give yourself permission to try things before you take on something huge, you need to take small steps to work towards that. With the book, Beth shows that in order to grow, you need to change stuff up, and to expand your expertise you have to both be willing to accept change. The journey although sometimes rocky, is beautifulAlthough Beths resume is full, lengthy, and inspirational, there have been some disappointments along the way.Despite everything not panning out the way we may hope, the journey is always worth acknowledging.WithImagine It Forward, Beth writes about her journey in a way that in part gives her time to revel in all the change making she has done (and it definitely deserves a round of applause). In the ending of the book, Beth talks about some of the opportunities and lessons that have made her career journey feel whole, and she summed it up with a few notesTransformation is a never-ending journey, for your company, your team, for you.Story is the glue that binds us. We need stories to give our work, and our lives, meaning. Strategy is a story well told. Vision and courageous leadership never go out of style.Believe in possibility. Get comfortable with not knowing. With living in the in-between of what was and what will be.This article first appeared on The EveryGirl.

Overseas Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) Information
Overseas Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) InformationOverseas Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) InformationWhen considering military service, one realization you must be aware of is that you could be stationed anywhere on the planet to support the mission of the Department of Defense. While no military deployment or overseas duty station or any duty station, for that matter is permanent, it can be expensive to live far from home. The higher cost of living that can accompany an overseas military deployment is compensated monetarily through the Cost of Living Allowance (COLA). This is different from the Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH), which accounts for a significant part of the rent or mortgage of the military member when at a permanent duty station. In addition to salary and bonuses, the military provides several allowances to offset the cost of living and housing for service members. For instance, soldiers who live on an Army base in the barracks receive military housing and meals for free. However, if your duty situation requires you to live off base, the military provides allowances for such things as housing, meals, clothing, travel, moving, and family separation. Overseas COLA The Overseas Cost of Living Allowance is the militarys answer to its members being stationed in various places throughout the world where the cost of living is higher. The COLA is a non-taxable supplement based on average pay and the cost of housing for the local population. Depending upon where you are stationed, how many years youve been in the service, your rank, and if you have dependents or not, the COLA will vary greatly. The average supplement is $300 per month. The basic measurement is a comparison of continental United States (CONUS) shopping behavior and the aggregate shopping behavior at each overseas location. Military members are stationed at more than 600 different locations overseas, and this variable cost of living allowance helps monetarily when the military mem ber and family have to live among the population where the military presence is located.(This includes Alaska and Hawaii.) Overseas COLA is calculated by a complex economic database that takes into account the spending habits of Americans at home in comparison to prices for similar goods and services overseas. The result of this comparison is an index that reflects the cost of living. If prices at home or abroad fluctuate, it may affect the cost of living allowance. Therefore, the COLA is not a fixed amount. Currency values can also affect the COLA.As the dollar strengthens or weakens worldwide compared to the currency of the military members duty station, the COLA can also change. These COLA adjustments are either immediate or made incrementally, depending on whether the payment will increase or decrease. For COLA changes based on data, increases are made immediately, but COLA reductions based on data are phased in per month to help minimize the impact. COLA changes based on curren cy are effective immediately for both increases and decreases. The Cost of Living Allowance does not reimburse expenses but rather increases the paycheck of the military member every two weeks this will offset higher overseas prices of goods and services. It does not compensate for remoteness, hardship, or non-availability of goods and services at remote duty stations. Other Military Payments and Allowances Military members may receive other payments and allowances in addition to military pay The Basic Allowance for Subsistence is used to pay for food its typically a few hundred dollars a month. The Basic Allowance for Housing offsets the cost of housing when members live off-base it varies from city to city.A Clothing Allowance pays forthe replacement of uniforms and uniform decorations. For jobs that require civilian clothes, the military provides a civilian clothing allowance. The Moving Allowance pays for the transportation of household goods during a permanent change-of-stati on (PCS) move. Temporary Lodging Allowance covers the cost of temporary housing during a PCS move.Soldiers assigned or deployed to locations where the military will not move families will receive a Family staffelung Allowance.

Finding hope and grace on the landing strip
Finding hope and grace on the landing stripFinding hope and grace on the landing stripI dont like to fly. Theres just something unnatural about strapping yourself into an uncomfortable seat and hurtling across the sky at 35,000 feet. Each bump, turn, seatbelt prompt, and varied engine whir unsettles me.Illustrations by John P. WeissWhats worse, we are stuffed like sardines into those pressurized canisters of recirculated bad breath and stagnant air. And theres always a screaming kid.On one flight, as I tried not to envision a fiery nosedive, a nervous woman next to me asked, Are the engines supposed to sound like that? My perverse sense of humor considered, No, thats the sound engines make before they stall. But I took pity on my fellow aviophobe and reassured her the engines were fine.Travel means growthAir travel today is one of the safest ways to get around. Despite my trepidation, I force myself to fly so that I dont miss out on the opportunities of life.My wife, who is a mora ex perienced traveler than I, helped me a great deal. Whenever I try to talk myself out of a trip, she brings me back to reality. As a result, I have flown to study landscape painting several times in Idaho.I studied writing and blogging with the author Jeff Goins by flying to Franklin, Tennessee. Ive flown with my wife to New York, where I immersed myself in the endless artwork at the Met.My wife, son and I enjoyed vacations in Costa Rica and Ireland, all thanks to the convenience of modern air travel. If one wants to grow, one cannot live under a rock.Flying requires a good deal of waiting. Waiting at airports for connecting flights. Waiting for takeoff. Waiting for hours in the air until the flight is over. Waiting for landing and arrival.Once the flight reaches cruising altitude and I relax a bit, Im able to reflect about flying, airplanes, people, and life.I have studied the diverse people on planes and in airports. In fact, I love to sketch them in my small, leather sketchbook.Fin al sketch of the guy across from me at the airport. Here are a few other, quick sketches I did of people at the airport.Theres so much humanity of varied ages, sex, nationality, and personalities at airports. All with different destinations, dreams, families, jobs, and futures.I have also studied the many different planes at airports. Like their passengers, airplanes have their own destinations, body types, peculiarities, and stories.Planes are like peopleCan you imagine the stories that planes could tell? About nervous flyers, close calls, magnificent flights, and worldly experiences.Like people, airplanes sometimes have turbulence in their lives. They have schedules to keep, places to go and responsibilities. They must take their jobs seriously, for they carry precious cargo. Much like a mother carrying her baby, or a father driving his infant in a car seat. And like people, planes eventually retire and grow old.One of the worlds largest airplane boneyards is the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona. It is there, where the dry climate limits corrosion, that over 4,200 military aircraft have retired.Photo by Tanja Zllner on UnsplashTheir parts are scavenged and engines stripped for reuse. They have become shells of what they once were. No longer airworthy, all they can do is sit with their memories. Not unlike old folks in retirement homes.Their maiden flights and distant travels are behind them now. The many souls lifted into the clouds to sunset horizons have long forgotten the reliable planes that carried them. The world moves on. Newer, upgraded and fancier jets have emerged. They continue to edge out their aging predecessors, like new employees who replace the senior and retired ones. The uncertainty of lifeOf course, some planes never made it to the boneyard. They were struck down in war, suffered mechanical failures or crashes. The same is true with people. Some are struck down on the battlefield. Others suffer medical events or accidents. Air travel, like life, can be uncertain.Comedian George Carlin once crackedIf black boxes survive air crashes, why dont they make the whole plane out of that stuff?Wouldnt it be interesting if people had their own black boxes? Recordings we could listen to after theyre gone, to better understand what went right and wrong. But then, maybe its better that we take our secrets with us.It would be nice if the world was completely safe. If there were no accidents, medical emergencies, pain or suffering. But perhaps the sweetness of life would be less without the comparison of loss?Perhaps the turbulence makes us appreciate the miracle of flight that much more? American journalist, Alexander Chase, wroteLovers of air travel find it exhilarating to hang poised between the illusion of immortality and the fact of death.Hope and graceEvery time I take a flight, my favorite part is the landing. Some people hate it, but with each descent, I feel the exhilaration of having overcome my fears. I also f eel the anticipation of reaching my destination and the journey ahead. My least favorite part of flying is the takeoff. But I grit my teeth, close my eyes and hurtle forward anyway. Because doing so moves me closer to my goals and a life well lived. With each landing I experience the hope I have for the future and the grace in knowing that I am alive, living an artful life and pursuing my dreams.Soon enough we all taxi to our final hangar or boneyard. The key is to soar skyward, for as long as our engines and wings allow, and journey ever higher, over the great landscape of our lives. Before you goIm John P. Weiss. 4 Tips for Using Video Interviewing to Avoid Hiring Bullies
4 Tips for Using Video Interviewing to Avoid Hiring BulliesWorkplace bullying is a serious problem which can undermine not only your company culture, but also your workers productivity. No one likes to be bullied, whether its in the schoolyard or the boardroom. One of the best ways to avoid workplace bullying is to start right from the hiring process. Video bewerbungsgesprching can help you avoid extending a job offer to a future workplace bully. Why is workplace bullying so harmful? After all, it sometimes can seem downright charming when Jim pulls pranks on stuffy coworker Dwight on NBCs hit sitcom The Office. In reality though, most workplace bullying is much worse than putting a stapler in jello. This negative behavior can be pervasive and harmful. Worst of all, it can even escalate into forms of bullying more dangerous than hiding office supplies.Unsurprisingly, this behavior can be extremely damaging to office morale. Its not just the bullied employees who are affected either. A new study from the University of British Columbia shows bullying has a harmful effect on even those workers not being directly bullied. The study found that non-bullied workers had similarly high turnover intentions. With the cost of employee turnover sometimes totaling 150 percent of a workers annual salary, this is an outcome your company should seek to avoid. Here are some ways to use video interviewing to avoid hiring bullies and keep your workspace a happier placeAnger Management?Confidence is one thing- aggressive behavior is another. It can sometimes be hard to tell a driven candidate from an aggressive one, but good hiring managers and recruiters can tell the difference. Look for telltale signs, including badmouthing former workplaces and coworkers. Whether your interview is live or a one way video interview, keep an eye out for subtle signs your candidate might have an angry personality.Ask about former pranksMost workers wouldnt admit to bullying in a video interview. Afte r all, they want to make a good impression on you and your company in buchen to secure the job. However, just because they wont admit to bullying doesnt mean they havent done it. Jim from The Office might not agree, but pranks are a stepping stone to bullying. In your video interview, ask your candidate about a prank theyve played on a coworker. These pranks could tell you a lot about your workers personality, and their predilection for bullying behavior.Watch the nonverbal cuesOne of the benefits of online video interviewing is the ability to watch nonverbal cues earlier in the hiring process. Use this to your advantage when looking for potential bullies. If nonverbal cues are aggressive, angry or negative take note of unterstellung behaviors. Nonverbal cues can tell you a lot about a potential employee and it can certainly tell you about their attitude. Their words might be rehearsed, but its likely their nonverbal communication will give them away.Funny or Mean?As we all know, hu mor is relative. Using humor in an interview setting can often break the tension and let you know more about the candidates personality in a more relaxed setting. This is doubly true when it comes to bullying behavior. Often times, bullies will shield their harmful behavior behind the excuse that they are just joking. So pay attention to the jokes your candidate is making during your live video interview. If any of these jokes seem inappropriate, even borderline so, this candidate might be a bully in disguise.Bullying in the workplace can cause your company to lose out on great employees and can foster an unhappy office environment. The best way to deal with bullies is to avoid hiring them in the first place. If you use video interviews carefully and watch behavior, you can skip dealing with these problem employees altogether. What are some ways you use video interviewing to avoid hiring workplace bullies? Sound off in the commentsSOURCE NBC, The University of British Columbia (WSJ), William G. Bliss (The Adivsor)

How to Get Your Resume Noticed
How to Get Your Resume Noticed How to Get Your Resume Noticed Sure the job market is tough right now, but, from my experience, people still arent putting the necessary effort into their resumes to ensure they are getting the attention the resumes deserve. So how do you make sure your resume grabs the attention of your reader? Follow along for a few resume tips and insights to reevaluate the document you have now and get better resultsAppearanceForget about a fancy letterhead and swirly font types. When employers comes across a fancy resume, they landsee that the candidate doesnt have enough confidence in his or her experience and abilities to just leave well enough alone. You dont need to dress up success success bleeds through the pages of your resume. With that being said, if for some reason you feel you must dress up your resume, I implore you, please dont include your picture. Your resume should describe who you are, your skills and accomplishments on paper. The interview is wher e potential employers can put a face with a name. And for you movie buffs, do not spray your resumes with a sweet scent (thank you, Legally Blonde). It is not a love letter and its smell, if any, will not help. The only exception to this rule is if you are applying for a position working in the creative department of a company or you want to be a model or actress and pictures of yourself are necessary. Otherwise, just say no.TextEliminate any large paragraphs of text on your resume. Too much text can result in your resume receiving a quick skim through, and then being tossed back into the pile. Hiring managers can receive hundreds of resumes a day they do not have the time or patience to read through masses of text. Just like in an elevator speech, you only have a short window of time to grab your readers attention. The text throughout your resume should be clear and concise. If you have large amounts of text, break them down into bullet points, which are much easier to swallow for pe ople. Bullet points force you to pull out only the main points of what you are trying to say, which will reduce the overall length of your resume.FontUse a voreingestellt font, such as Arial or Times New Roman. Avoid using fancy fonts because different recipients may open your resume on different operating systems. Using nonstandard fonts poses the risk of wingdings replacing fonts after the resume is opened.General RulesUse a chronological resume as opposed to a functional resume (Microsoft Word offers both templates).Be sure to read through the job description in its entirety before sending off your resume. HR managers will look for the listed skills and responsibilities throughout your resume before selecting it for further review. This is especially important if you know that your application is going to initially be screened by a software program. Most important, if you do not have the skill, do not put it on your resumeYou dont need anything fancy for your resume to get noticed , just the basics. Stop With Team Building Events, Try A Retreat Instead
Stop With Team Building Events, Try A Retreat InsteadStop With Team Building Events, Try A Retreat InsteadWhen was the last time you went on a team building event? Hopefully, it wasnt the time you had your lifes worst hangover, or when you accidentally kissed the colleague youd never spoken to. Of course, it could end up better than that, with new memories and deeper friendships with your co-workers. Even if you thought this was the best team building ever, I guarantee there is something even better a company retreatWe had a chat with Peter Fabor, founder of Surf amtsstube, a company that helps other companies organizing their retreats. Events that are filled with fun activities and a very productive work. Surf Office has been bringing value to companies like Automatic, Stripe or Shopify for over 3 years now. Heres why you should organize a company retreat instead of a team building event too.Heres how s last company retreat went.1. Peter, whats your main mission at Surf Office?Make people happy. Make employees of the companies that come for a retreat happier and more productive. We believe that the one thing successful companies have in common is investing in their employees.2. Whats the difference between a retreat and a team building event?clickToTweet tweet=Teambuilding is a cost, company retreact is an investment. prozentanteil by faborio quote=Team building is a cost, retreat is an investment.A team building usually means that your team goes somewhere for a night or two, have dinner together, drink a lot of alcohol, and play some games. During a retreat, team building is involved, but its just a side activity. The main purpose of a retreat is to work and be more productive. But to work doesnt necessarily mean to sit in a closed room. Most of the time its something different. The most common type of activity companies do during a retreat is a strategy meeting. They brainstorm and analyze what to do in the next 6 to 12 months. Because you just never have th e time in the usual work environment. Aretreat is a time to stop and really think about the business. Then, a lot of companies do hackathons they brainstorm new features for their product or service. And after they return from a retreat, they work on those ideas. Besides that, you can gosurfing or hiking with your colleagues. A lot of teams also do just some regular things like cooking a meal together. But thats after the work and its not the main purpose of a retreat. Sometimes, we have companies that simply want to switch their regular work environment and work from the beach. 3. How long should a good retreat last? The longest retreat weve organized was 3 weeks. But usually, its around 3-5 days. It also depends on the location. If you travel for a long time to get to the place youd like to do a retreat at, its better to stay for longer. The length is another difference between the team building and a retreat. No company would invest in a 5-day team building event. Related article sWhat job applicants need to know about culture fitThe key to Leanplums epic growth? Company cultureWhy we joined Bynders Global Work Remote Day4. How often should companies organize a retreat? It depends on 2 things the size of a company (its easier from the organizational point of view). For a large company, its enough to do it once a year. Secondly, it depends whether youre in an office or youre a distributed company. If youre a distributed company, then its good to do retreats more often. For example, one of our best clients is Automattic, they are 100% distributed and they communicate mainly on Slack. They have the need to meet in person more often and thats why they organize retreats every 3-4 months. They save money for the office rent, and they use the saved money to invest into retreats, e.g. their employees. WordPress has over 400 employees and they do a whole company retreat once a year. They have 2 full-time employees to organize that. Surf Office helps them organize the partial team retreats mentioned above (6-10 people).5. What does the package you offer to companies include? The core service includes organizing the accommodation, workspace, meeting rooms, projector, flipchart and anything your team might need to work efficiently. We also build a calendar for you and it comes from the basic schedule you send we use Trello for that and you can see it, add information, delete things or further develop it. So if you send us a basic schedule, then we recommend you some options (e.g. seafood restaurant on the arrival day, and we will suggest the best one and book it for you.) We want you to spend a minimal amount of time to organize everything. Sometimes, we organize meetups, as we have great connections with the local communities. We can also invite guest speakers on different topics during your retreat. Sometimes we create the content for companies, such as pictures and video for their social media channels. Then you can put it in about and hiring p age, to show that you do some cool stuff and you have a great company culture.Every retreat is very organized and transparent. Like that, everyone knows what the plan is, what youll be doing.6. What kind of activities can people do at a retreat organized by Surf Office? We want to offer experiences that are authentic and high quality. Also, its usually something that makes people get out of their comfort zone, which secures personal growth. We also want to make sure these activities are natural and people are excited to try them. Surfing, for example could be a scary one for some. Thats why before surf, we let the whole team watch youtube videos, they do thermisch up together and get motivated by each other. Its important to mention that our team tried all the activities we offer and we have close relationships with people managing those activities. Except for surfing, we also offer paddle boarding, e-bike tours, combined sightseeing around Lisbon (which include checking secret corner s ?? ). With e-bikes, theres always a healthy competition between the team members which is always fun. Then we also offer hiking and trips around the island of Gran Canaria. But of course, companies can organize activities themselves as well. In case they are interested in some particular sport or activity, were always happy to help them find the best providers around.7. Do some teams bring lebensgefhrtes or families with them to retreats? Would you recommend that?It depends on the company. If your employees are older and have families, its good to bring family and kids. Also, to bring your partner. But then its harder to do all the team building activities. What happens if you bring your partner is, they go exploring the city while you work. And after you finish work, you have dinner together with everyone. Then, its a good idea to have a retreat for 3 days and then the partner comes for 2 more days which is not a part of a retreat anymore. But if youre a startup (usually with a q uite young staff) its OK to go somewhere for 5 days. I mean, you dont have a family yet, etc. Dont get me wrong, though. We have a lot of people who are around 40-60 and they do the same experiences, they still come without partners or families. It really depends on the company and the team.8. Do you remember the very first retreat you organized? How was it different from the most recent one?(Laughing) The first one was a team of 4 people. They stayed for 2 weeks in Gran Canaria and I spent most of the time with them. I organized everything myself and did all the activities together with them. We became very close friends and we had a really great time together. Today, theres a lot of automation within the process. I try to meet some of the groups that come and have a chat with them. So the main difference is that I dont have to invest most of my time in being with our customers during retreats, but they still have a great time
How we fool ourselves (and what to do about it)
How we fool ourselves (and what to do about it) How we fool ourselves (and what to do about it) My battery is low and itâs getting dark. Those were the final words of the Martian rover Opportunity as reported by numerous media outlets. The rover, lovingly nicknamed Oppy, fell silent in June 2018 after it was stuck in a massive dust storm.NASA officials beamed up hundreds of commands to the little rover, asking it to call home, but with no success. Oppy was officially pronounced dead in February 2019.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! But what got most peopleâs attention wasnât the fact that Oppy operated on Mars for 14 years- well past its 90-day lifetime. Nor was it the record-breaking 28 miles it traversed on the red planet- far more than any other extraplanetary rover. No, what took the world by storm was the roverâs final transmission to Earth, reported with a tweet from a journalist. My battery is low and itâs getting dark. The tweet went viral, generating a media deluge across the globe. One guy even got a tattoo of Oppyâs final words on his back. The message resonated with the public in part because we all feel, from time to time, like our batteries are low and itâs getting dark out there. To have the same sentiment expressed by a non-human gave us all the feels. For 14 years, this little rover dutifully obeyed her humansâ commands, while getting whipped around by fierce Martian winds and the type of intense dust storms that left Matt Damon stranded on the planetâs surface. As the dust slowly swallowed Oppy, she beamed to Earth a final goodbye that summed up the courage of the little rover that could. My battery is low and itâs getting dark.Hereâs the problem: The story is false.Right before it went silent, Oppy beamed a bunch of routine code to Earth that reported, among numerous other things, its power levels and the outside light reading. A journalist- who didnât let facts get in the way of a good story- took this r andom code, paraphrased it into English, and tweeted to the world that those were âbasicallyâ the roverâs last words.Millions of people then hit the retweet button and a chorus of media outlets published stories about the roverâs final transmission- all without pausing, contemplating, or bothering to ask, âHow does a remote-controlled space robot spit out fully formed English sentences designed to tug at peopleâs heartstrings?âI spent four years serving on the operations team for Oppy, building stuff that went to Mars onboard the rover. Yet, for a brief moment, even I fell for the story. When I first read Oppyâs supposed final words, I let out an instinctive âAwh!â and began to scroll through the press coverage digging for more. Then, out of nowhere, Richard Feynmanâs famous adage jolted me out of my trance: âThe first principle is you must not fool yourself, and youâre the easiest person to fool.âStories are powerful stuff. They create order out of chaos, clarity out of complexity, and a cause-and-effect relationship out of coincidence. These mentally vivid images strike a deep, lasting chord with us.Stories can be used for good- to move people and to instigate change. But they can also be used for bad. âOld George Orwell got it backward,â Chuck Palahniuk, the author of Fight Club, writes.âBig Brother isnât watching. Heâs singing and dancing. Heâs pulling rabbits out of a hat.â Heâs telling you powerful stories that overwhelm you until your imagination becomes âas useful as your appendix.â We fall for the story, throw logic and skepticism to the wind, and rush off to get matching Oppy tats.Fake news isnât a modern phenomenon. Between a good story and a bunch of data, the story has always prevailed.A mountain of data dispelling the fraudulent study that links vaccines to autism isnât interesting. Jenny McCarthy explaining how her son developed autism after getting a vaccine (and then being miraculously cure d through a dietary intervention) is endlessly fascinating. The remedy? Exercise your skepticism muscles so they donât wither. The next time youâre tempted to instinctively hit that retweet button or accept conventional wisdom for what it is, pause for just a moment.Ask yourself, Is this right? Am I being captivated by the story? If I had to poke holes in this story, what might I say? Question everything from the supposed emotional appeals of a dying rover to confident claims by a loud-mouthed politician. Now, if youâll excuse me, I have to go.My battery is low and itâs getting dark.Ozan Varol is a rocket scientist turned law professor and bestselling author. Recruiting Through Professional Associations
Recruiting Through Professional Associations Recruiting Through Professional Associations Recruiting Through Professional Associations Talent management is a hot topic in HR today. With the US Department of Labor projecting a 3 million worker shortfall by 2012 with total jobs expected to jump nearly 15% over the decade while the workforce grows only 12% it is increasingly urgent for companies to develop strategies for continuous recruitment of talented workers. The shortage is expected to be particularly severe in service industries, which are projecting nearly 100% of this growth and already experiencing staff shortfalls, according to industry organizations such as the American Hospital Association. Think Long Term From the statistics, its clear that recruiters will continue to face challenges in the years and decades to come. While its important to be able to fill immediate needs, its also essential to take a strategic, long-term view of hiring so that you can maintain the health and growth of your organization into the future. Building a talent pipeline has never been so important! Whether youre an internal or external recruiter, you can benefit from the strategy used by Roni Henderson to build a new recruiting practice from the ground up. Transitioning from a 13-year career in logistics operations and management, she recently signed on with Baldwin Gilman, the largest executive search firm in Cincinnati. The company is on an aggressive growth path and added Henderson to develop a dedicated recruiting practice in her career specialty of transportation, logistics, and supply chain. Professional Associations a Crucial Strategy Henderson immediately began investigating trade associations affiliated with her target industry. She researched the organizations, their publications, and chapters in the Greater Cincinnati area to find those that promised the greatest return on her investment of time, energy, and membership dues. She zeroed in on two associations whose membership of logistics and supply chain executives is an exact fit for her needs. Heres how shes putting this strategy to work: Industry knowledge: Henderson reads the association newsletters and journals to stay abreast of whats going on the industry as well as future trends. Contacts: She also culls key names from journal articles as potential sources for candidates, for search assignments, or simply as networking contacts. Her membership allows her access to local, national, and even international directories of members along with their job titles and company names. Local presence: Henderson attends local meetings monthly and regional meetings occasionally. Her aim at these events is to build visibility for herself and her firm. She talks the talk with industry professionals, establishes her credibility and expertise, and finds out what their hiring needs are. When appropriate, she follows up later to discuss a possible assignment or determine interest in making a career move. The strategy paid off almost immediately for Henderson, who located a candidate for a current position through her outreach to the professional association. The relationship was essential, she said. Because he was only passively looking and didnt want to jeopardize his current position, he wouldnt have opened up to me if he hadnt known me through the association. Dos and Donts Before jumping on the association bandwagon, be sure you understand these critical elements that will spell the success or failure of your efforts: Be constant. You cant just show up at one meeting and poach the talent you find. Instead, commit to a long-term relationship, participate often, and understand that you might or might not have immediate results. Focus on members needs. Just as in any networking interaction, the more you focus on your audience and investigate their needs, the more credible and valued you will be. Interact with as many people as you can. Every meeting is an opportunity to meet new members. Dont waste the opportunity by latching onto the people you already know or those you perceive as having the highest potential. Instead, make the rounds, establish your presence, and soak up information rather than talking about yourself. Look for opportunities to build visibility. You have knowledge about employment issues, hiring trends, employer needs, and more that is valuable to members. Volunteer to give an educational presentation once or twice a year. Members will come to recognize you as the recruiter for their industry. Professional associations can be a doorway into the specific professions you most need to recruit. Study your talent needs, then identify the associations that offer the most potential. With the right approach and a commitment to a long-term relationship, this strategy offers high potential for building a talent pipeline for the challenging future.

Key Job Skill For the Future
Key Job Skill For the Future Key Job Skill For the Future Private detectives have it. So do preschool teachers. Even fitness trainers do it. What is the one career strength that employees in these fields (and others) all possess- and will be coveted by employers in years to come? The answer might surprise you. The key job skill for the future.Itâs empathy. It seems counterintuitive in todayâs tech-crazed world, but empathy ranks as the most sought-after skill, according to data compiled by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Technology makes us faster and more connected- but it seems, in ways that donât count quite as much. The study estimates that by the year 2020, the industries that will see the most growth- and will be hiring more- are not only those aforementioned professionals, but also personal financial planners, music tutors, school psychologists- even massage therapists and registered nurses. For the most part, technology is a saving grace. Without it, telecommuting would be virtually impossible in a virtual world. It helps working parents, baby boomers and recent grads alike find employment- and their own little slice of work life balance. But that doesnât mean that telecommuters shouldnât foster human connection as they toil away from their home offices. Employees still need to reach out to far-flung colleagues and offer them a virtual pat on the back and lots of encouragement. That allows for human connection in a virtual world. Sure, with every technological advancement comes the naysayers, who think that with each step forward, we are taking two back in terms of human connection. But what this study shows is that people (and the world) still value what makes us truly human- the art of empathy and the unique, beautiful art of being human. Readers, what do you think of this study? How have you been empathetic in your previous positions?

7 Questions with 3D Printing Icon Charles Hull
7 Questions with 3D Printing Icon Charles Hull 7 Questions with 3D Printing Icon Charles Hull 7 Questions with 3D Printing Icon Charles Hull I kind of look at them as all my children and its hard to pick a favorite, says Charles Chuck Hull, the co-founder and CTO of 3D Systems, about existing applications of 3D printing. When you have invented a technology and seen it grow from birth to adulthood over 30 years, its natural to feel that way. An active private pilot and an avid photographer, 76-year old father of 3D printing Hull holds numerous patents worldwide and has received several prestigious awards, including being inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame, for his invention and commercialization of stereolithography the first commercial 3D printing technology. His invention, the SLA-1 3D printer, is being recognized as a Landmark by ASME this year. After receiving a B.S. in engineering physics from the University of Colorado, Hull moved to California to pursue his engineering career, first as a senior engineer at Bell Howell and then as an engineering manager at Du Pont. He developed and patented the stereolithography process at UVP, Inc., where he served six years as vice president of engineering. With the founding of 3D Systems in 1986 he initiated the 3D printing industry a juggernaut thats reinventing manufacturing in America today. During his early career, Hull got involved in design projects for plastic components. The time between when you had the design finished and you saw your first finished part was typically six weeks and then if you found problems with it you had to recycle, he says. He recalls working on several applications in ultraviolet radiation at UVP and one of those being UV curable polymers, which were thin sheets of plastic. When I saw these UV curable coatings, says Hull, I thought was there any way I could do some kind of imaging and manipulation to make prototypes of plastic parts? Thats how I got the idea of stereolithography in the first place. In ASME.orgs recent podcast, Hull spoke about the early days of 3D printing and how it continues to change the face of manufacturing. Here are a few snippets of the conversation. Q1. After you invented stereolithography and created the first 3D printed part, what changed? Hull: I 3D printed the first part in 1983. I spent time after that trying to further perfect the technology and get the first patent application in place. Once that happened it was a question of commercialization. After I presented the business plan to the company I was with, we decided to spin off another company and licensed the technology I had developed into this new company. What changed then was the formation of the first company 3D Systems that was really the beginning of the additive manufacturing industry. Charles Hullâs self-portrait bust and his SLA-1 3D printer at The National Inventors Hall of Fame. Image: National Inventors Hall of Fame / 3D Systems Q2. When did you first envision 3D printing being used in manufacturing? Hull: We started the company in 1986 as a development company. We had our first product then to sell first as a beta system at the end of 1987 and then commercially in 1988. That was the first 3D printer, the SLA-1. We envisioned it for prototyping applications but right away our customers started mentioning the potential for manufacturing applications. One of the first manufacturing applications we pursued was casting patterns. We then started to see a vision of how it could be used in manufacturing. Of course this was all very short-run manufacturing at that time. Q3. What pushed the technology into full commercial use? Hull: The first major users of the technology were engineers in the automotive industry. The problem back in that era was that the US and to some extent the EU automotive industry were falling behind Asian manufacturers, in terms of how quickly they could produce new cars. They were looking for ideas and technology to help speed up the design process. 3D printing became a big part of that along with 3D CAD, which was just emerging at that time. These companies along with aerospace companies helped push it forward to commercial use. Q4. Currently there are several new technologies and 3D printers promising speeds of printing unheard of before. Whats your opinion on that? Hull: I am a big promoter of that. We recently demonstrated a high-speed system which is a cell of three 3D printers, with robotic arms to pull out the parts and place on finishing stations, and present them at the end for the next step in an industrial production line. Our idea is that we will produce these small high-speed 3D printers and help companies integrate those into the production lines. This kind of technology is going to be very important in taking additive manufacturing to production. 3D Systems at the Grand Opening of the state-of-the-art Healthcare Technology Center. Image: 3D Systems Q5. The last five years have witnessed a 3D printing boom but will it continue in the next decade? Hull: Absolutely, and there are a few ways to look at this boom. There was certainly a kind of hype element to it where people were expecting 3D printing to instantly do everything and that hype I think has kind of subsided. The good thing is that its created a general awareness in not just industrial people but the population as a whole understands what 3D printing is. Thousands of companies around the world are implementing the technology. It is definitely on a growth curve and in that sense it has spread to all the corners of the world. That will continue to the next decade and beyond. Q6. As an engineer, what has been your biggest learning from the day you invented 3D printing until now? Hull: Not a day goes by when you dont learn something. Probably the biggest for me is that I had been an engineer and as I was developing this technology, I was also studying and learning entrepreneurship, so basically learning how to grow a startup business. I had to learn more about the business side in order to make 3D printing happen. Q7. Whats your advice to young engineers who hope to invent a disruptive technology? Hull: Its very exciting to see lots of young entrepreneurs nowadays. There are really two keys one is being the very best engineer that you can be. For example, if you are a mechanical engineer or whatever your engineering field is, understand that discipline in great depth and be an expert. The other is to do a lot of interfacing with other engineering technologies and with other professions because its the intersection of the knowledge you have with the issues and problems that you encounter in the broader society is where disruptive inventions happen. You need both the elements to be a good engineer. Listen to the Podcast: How Charles Hull Conceived 3D Printing Learn more about the latest technologies in 3D printing at ASMEsAM3D Conference Expo. Office hacks 5 fun tricks to increase your productivity
Office hacks 5 fun tricks to increase your productivity Office hacks 5 fun tricks to increase your productivity An office that is simultaneously relaxed and productive? How does that work? In the corporate world, weâve long been conditioned to believe that a good work ethic is synonymous with a gritty, grinding style of professionalism, where the optimal results spring from long hours of hard work and discipline. But recently, experience has told us otherwise, as startups embrace mantras like âwork smarter, not harder,â as a way of re-engineering productivity. A company like Google, which gives employees gourmet food, endless entertainment and over-the-top perks, is arguably successful because of these policies, not despite them. The model goes a long way in explaining why so many startups have embraced more holistic work cultures, designed to nourish employees to their fullest potential rather than simply demanding more from them. Here are five methods I have found work well at our company, a web and mobile search tool for commercial office space, to promote business growth through a positive, relaxed work culture. 1. Establish an open-door policy This flexible policy invites employees to interact, ask questions and challenge their managers - in a good way. When team members feel comfortable with one another as well as with their superiors, communication is faster, good ideas are less likely to be left on the table, and alternately, red flags are less likely to escape detection. And âopen-doorâ policies are not relegated to more open, transparent work cultures. Successful companies with more traditional organizational structures and cultures employ them successfully as well. 2. Keep everyone full Free coffee is always nice, but a fridge full of snacks is even better. About 67 percent of employees who receive free food at work are very happy with their jobs. In addition to the cost benefit for employees, food around the office helps people stay energized and gives them less incentive to eat a heavy lunch that will put them to sleep later on in the afternoon. The same study found that this perk is more important to millennials than to other age group, yet only 16 percent of employees claim they get free snacks at work. Thatâs easy to fix. 3. Encourage creativity Give your employees an interactive canvas, collectively. For us, the canvas is a giant blackboard on the wall where anyone on the team can draw with chalk, write inspiring messages, place Post-it notes and more. While Slack often serves a similar purpose for us, we find the act of physically writing or drawing to be creatively liberating. Since many of us spend so much time behind our screens, it can act as a much-needed distraction, especially an artistic one that will stimulate the mind with new ideas. Finally, it doesnât hurt to add a bit of culture to the office by way of paintings or music, as long as itâs not provocative. 4. Get out of the office Even though the office is a professional workplace, your teammates can benefit from getting to know each other on a personal level as well. Engage your team through periodic happy hours and dinners to show that the relationships you build go well beyond the confines of office walls. You can even try out team-building outings like sporting events, hikes, company-wide retreats and other events. These outings can promote bonding between team members, reduce employee stress and give employees the chance to get to know one another outside of the office. When your colleague is also your friend, itâs that much easier to support them professionally. 5. Choose the right layout Our recent survey of 75 New York startups revealed that 94 percent of founders believe office space plays a role in attracting talent. Rightfully so, considering most of us spend a significant part of our days (and sadly, our lives) in the office. For your team to be comfortable and productive, choosing an airy space with plenty of natural light can be surprisingly effective. Itâs one reason open floor plans are all the rage these days. This type of layout tends to be more visually appealing, friendly, and ultimately yields more fluid, collaborative work. In order for this type of layout to work without creating too many distractions, youâll need to dedicate a few isolated quiet spaces (or breakout rooms) for meetings, calls or just heads-down work. You donât have to choose productivity over employee well-being and happiness. Instead, you can create an environment that melds perfectly with your mission and team while keeping things efficient and positive. Happy employees are 38 percent more productive than unhappy employees and produce 37 percent greater sales. The implications for employee retention and productivity are significant. In time, you will find an optimal balance between your teamâs enjoyment of the workplace and their productivity. You need both for your company to reach its true potential. 10 Steve Jobs Quotes Thatll Stick With You Long After You Read Them
10 Steve Jobs Quotes Thatll Stick With You Long After You Read Them 10 Steve Jobs Quotes Thatll Stick With You Long After You Read Them There was only one Steve Jobs, and itâs easy to see why weâre so fascinated with him. A twin separated at birth; a visionary who made products that changed how we use technology; a college dropout who studied coding and calligraphy for fun; a wisdom seeker who spent months wandering India barefoot in a sarong. Oh, and after a long flirtation with sweater vests and bow ties, a man who wore a black turtleneck and blue jeans everywhere he went. As if that werenât enough, Jobs was also a master salesman and a fantastic orator, and much of what he had to say carried astonishing wisdom, especially coming from someone who devoted his life to creating consumer electronics products. Of course, thatâs the point. Apple is much more than just a remarkably successful manufacturer of electronic devices, and Jobs was much more than a remarkably successful entrepreneur. In presentation after presentation, at Macworld, his unforgettable Stanford commencement speech, and elsewhere, Jobs shared insights that will remain useful for decades to come or more. Hereâs the best of what he had to say: 1. âFor the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: âIf today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?â And whenever the answer has been no for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.â I love this quote so much, I wrote a whole column about it. Itâs hard to hold yourself to that standard, but itâs important to try. If youâre reading this page, you have choices about what to do with your life. Choose wisely, because you only get the one. 2. âYou canât connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something- your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.â An especially important lesson for entrepreneurs. You canât start a business, project, or other large undertaking knowing how you will solve every problem that arises, or how your skills and assets, plus those of your co-workers, might combine to create something wonderful. But you have to trust that they will. As someone wise once said, itâs like driving a car at night. At any given moment, you can only see as far as your headlights will allow, but you can make the whole trip that way. 3. âFocus is about saying no.â This is an important insight, because what you say no to may wind up mattering even more than what you say yes to in your career. We tend to start out saying yes to everything. Every opportunity, every new job, new project, or new partnership, seems worth pursuing. But real success comes from knowing what to say no to. Remember the first quote- our time on this planet is limited, our work time and resources even more so. Being careful to spend them wisely will benefit your business and career more than nearly anything else. 4. âOften, the people who are successful loved what they did so they could persevere when things got really tough. The ones that didnât love it quit- cause theyâre sane.â As people smarter than I have observed, you can achieve just about anything you want if you are willing to hear no often enough. Most of us donât have the thick skin, confidence, or determination that has enabled some of the worldâs best-known entrepreneurs to get a running start. Those who do have that perseverance are likelier to wind up on top. 5. âI think if you do something and it turns out pretty good, then you should go do something else wonderful, not dwell on it for too long. Just figure out whatâs next.â Jobs was on to something here, because too many people are too quick to rest on their past successes, or focus on their current ones, rather than keep watching the horizon for the next opportunity or threat. Itâs a dangerous strategy. Just ask Kodak. 6. âGreat things in business are never done by one person. Theyâre done by a team of people.â Jobs talked about how his model for business was the Beatles and how they balanced each other so that the whole was greater than the sum of the parts. And then he went on to this quote, which goes to the heart of his point. Jobs wasnât just repeating lines about teamwork and great employees that every large-company CEO has uttered at some point. He really lived it, surrounding himself with the best performers he could. And it shows in Appleâs continued success years after his passing. 7. âYour work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you havenât found it yet, keep looking. Donât settle. As with all matters of the heart, youâll know when you find it.â Likening finding work he loved to finding a person he loved is very revealing about how Jobs thought. And itâs something all entrepreneurs, and maybe all people, should aspire to. Jobs was right: Life is too short to spend a third of our days on work we donât like, or donât care about. Loving what you do is not a luxury; itâs a necessity for a happy life. 8. âSometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Donât lose faith.â Jobs said this about his very public- and devastating- ouster from Apple, when the companyâs board voted to fire him, siding with then-CEO Jon Sculley. Though he couldnât see it then, he said, âgetting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.â 9. âRemembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked.â External expectations, pride, and fear of embarrassment or failure all drop away in the face of death. Jobs had the rare talent, or maybe the spiritual discipline, to keep the shortness of his life front and center in his mind nearly every day. Itâs an uncomfortable mental state- but it can be very liberating and lead to great creativity. And it can help you stop being afraid of things that really donât deserve to frighten you. 10. âHave the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.â If you remember that youâre going to die, and that you have nothing to lose, there is no reason not to follow your heart, Jobs said. Letting his intuition take him where it wanted him to go- to calligraphy class, or off to India- let him live what turned out to be an extraordinary life. Just think what it could do for you.
